Simpson Manufacturing Co., Inc. (NYSE: SSD), headquartered in Pleasanton, California, has been a publicly held company since May 1994. Since that time, average annual growth in revenues has been approximately 13%. The company's business consists of two major business segments. Accounting for approximately 89% of its 2008 revenues, Simpson Strong-Tie Company Inc. manufactures and markets a broad line of connector, anchor, shearwall, stainless steel and collated fastener products for residential and commercial construction. The remaining revenues are generated by Simpson Dura-Vent Company, Inc., which manufactures venting systems for gas and wood burning appliances, such as water heaters, stoves and fireplaces.
Simpson Strong-Tie over the last several years has expanded its operations to include manufacturing and distribution facilities outside of the United States. It now has manufacturing facilities in Canada, England, France, Denmark and China and distributes product throughout most of Europe, in South and Central America, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and the Middle East. Simpson Strong-Tie has expanded its product offerings of pre-fabricated steel shearwall products primarily for the new construction market, a line of stainless steel fasteners under the Swan Secure brand name, and has expanded its line of chemical and mechanical anchor products and powder actuated tools. In 2008, Simpson Strong-Tie acquired certain assets of Liebig, which manufactures mechanical metric anchor products for distribution primarily in Europe. Simpson Strong-Tie's products are sold through home centers and contractor and dealer distributors. Simpson Strong-Tie believes its products also benefit from strong building codes throughout the United States. The adoption and enforcement of these codes continues to benefit sales of products designed to make homes and commercial structures safer when subjected to the forces of nature. This is especially evident in the regions where earthquakes or severe storms are likely to occur.
Simpson Dura-Vent manufactures and distributes its products throughout the United States and into Canada, Japan and Australia. It sells its products primarily through distributors and direct to original equipment manufacturers. In 2008, Simpson Dura-Vent acquired ProTech Systems, Inc., which expanded its distribution of special gas vent and relining products.
