The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company is the world's largest marketer of branded consumer products for lawn and garden care. Scotts continues to build its market leadership based on the strength of its industry-leading brands and favorable demographics.

Brand power

The Company's brands are the most recognized in the industry. In the U.S., the Company's Scotts®, Miracle-Gro® and Ortho® brands are market-leading in their categories, as is the consumer Roundup® brand, which is marketed in North America and most of Europe exclusively by ScottsMiracle-Gro and owned by Monsanto. The Company also owns Smith & Hawken, a leading brand of garden-inspired products that includes pottery, watering equipment, gardening tools, outdoor furniture and live goods.

Financial

Sales for 2007 were $2.9 billion consisting of four segments - North America (69%), International (16%), Scotts Lawn Service (8%) and Smith & Hawken 7%. Strong free cash flow allows The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company to accelerate the repayment of debt and provides increased flexibility for future growth. Additionally, the Company remains focused on achieving a Return on Invested Capital that is in-line with its peer group.

Strategies for growth

The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company remains committed to high-potential initiatives to enhance long-term shareholder value. These include:

  • Continued growth in the core consumer business in North America that results in overall category growth and market share gains. Specifically, the North American focus is threefold: 1) increase household penetration in the lawns category while also increasing frequency of use by existing consumers, 2) continue to introduce high-margin, value-added products, such as potting mix and garden soil, that produce superior results for consumers, and 3) continue to research innovative products that anticipate a need in the marketplace.

  • High-margin growth for Scotts LawnService that leverages the power of the Scotts brand. Scotts LawnService is the second largest player in the lawn service industry, and differentiates itself by offering the highest level of customer service, advice and results.
