Health Management Associates, Inc. (HMA) is an owner operator of general acute care hospitals in communities situated primarily in the Southeast and Southwest United States. As of December 31, 2007 HMA operated 59 hospitals in 15 states with approximately 8,500 licensed beds.
New Direction -- HMA began a new direction in 2007 that it believes is necessary to improve performance over the next two to three years. The direction has four elements: Mission, Vision, Strategy and Plan.
HMA's Mission is the delivery of compassionate and high quality health care services that improve the quality of life for our patients, physicians, and the communities we serve.
HMA's Vision is to lead the nation's hospital industry in quality and customer satisfaction in order to accomplish its mission and maximize its operating performance.
HMA's Strategy is to stabilize our operations, build a foundation for more sustainable performance, take the necessary steps to become the hospital- industry leader in quality and customer satisfaction, seize and defend market share, enhance our operational discipline to increase revenue and manage resources, rationalize our asset portfolio and gradually deleverage our balance sheet.
HMA's Plan is to implement the strategy and accomplish the mission. HMA has assembled the leadership team to affect the necessary change through new organizational structure, culture and accountability. Capital is being redirected away from acquisitions in the near-term to focus on reinvesting more resources into our existing hospitals than ever before. The Company will continue rationalizing its portfolio of hospitals. HMA is entering into whole-hospital joint ventures with highly regarded local healthcare service providers, including other hospitals and physician groups. HMA is leveraging its clinical excellence, developing and maintaining strong relationships with key physicians, and focusing on quality and customer satisfaction.
